Invading Species Awareness Event on August 16th
In 2022 and 2023 Ontario Invading Species Awareness Program staff held aquatic Invading species events at the Sandy Cove boat launch. They arrived with samples of invading species, and lots of handouts.
We have invited them back this year and they will be at the Sandy Cove boat launch from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on August 16th.
The event is not just for adults. As you can see from the picture kids also found the event interesting and the program staff did a great job entertaining and educating the young cottagers.
Invading species already identified in Drag and Spruce are Eurasian Milfoil (many sites and an active control program), and Phragmites (at least one site in the Dardanelles pond). As with Milfoil, control is much more difficult when a species is established.
Information about invading species can be found at https://www.invadingspecies.com/invaders/
We should all be vigilant and report sighting of suspected invading species, with pictures if possible, to https://www.invadingspecies.com/.../invading-species... and to dslpoainvasive@gmail.com
