Responsible Disposal for a Cleaner Future
Every piece of lead fishing tackle you drop off with us is handled with care to ensure it never harms our wildlife or re-enters the environment. We’re committed to responsible, safe recycling that turns this toxic material into something useful while protecting our lakes.
Our Process
- Collection & Sorting – All lead (sinkers, jigs, weights—any condition) is gathered from drop-off locations, events, the AGM, and executive cottages. We store it securely in sealed containers to prevent any accidental release.
- Partnered Recycling – Collected lead is transported to a licensed recycling facility specializing in metals and hazardous materials. Following the model of successful Ontario programs like the province-wide “Let’s Get The Lead Out” initiative (fishleadfree.ca), we partner with professional recyclers (similar to how Wolfe Lake Association works with facilities like Kimco Recycling in Kingston). There, the lead is processed, melted down, and repurposed – often into new products like industrial batteries or other metal goods—keeping it out of landfills and waterways.
- Why Recycling Matters—Lead is a valuable recyclable metal, but it’s hazardous if mishandled. By routing it through authorized channels (rather than regular trash or landfills without proper handling), we comply with Ontario’s hazardous waste guidelines and prevent any risk of leaching into soil or water.
This ensures 100% of what you donate contributes to real environmental good—no lead goes back into nature. We’re proud to follow best practices from established lake associations across Ontario, where thousands of pounds of toxic tackle have already been safely diverted.
By participating, you’re not just cleaning up our lakes – you’re closing the loop on lead pollution.
Thank you for helping make Haliburton a leader in eco-friendly angling!
