Hazard Buoy Update

Thanks to the efforts of John Travaglini and Ryan Vincent, the 7 buoys in Drag Lake were deployed on Saturday.

Another reminder to avoid the Eurasian Milfoil weed bed off Harris Beach.  This invasive species can spread easily and reports are already being received of pieces being seen floating in other parts of our lakes.

Click on the map below for the location of all the hazard buoys.  (Note: this map is available for viewing on our DSLPOA website – click here)

Fishing over Milfoil Bed

We have recently received reports that fishermen are again boating into the weed bed area off Harris Beach which has been designated by surrounding buoys. It is very important to remember that Eurasian Milfoil is an Invasive Species that spreads very rapidly when separated by a propellor or fishing line. We have similar weed particles reported as having drifted into East Bay recently. This could result in spread of the weed elsewhere in Drag & Spruce . The result, as happened in the Kawarthas & elsewhere, is clogged waterways & lower property values!

Moreover it is a concern that fishers over the weed bed are in all probability likely to hook bass which are out of season until 4th Sat in June & the fisher is subject to a fine by the MNR
We therefore request all  boaters to avoid the weed bed off Harris Beach & ,when fishing in season. cast only off the perimeter & not into the weed bed itself.
It would also be appreciated if those renting their cottages post this notice on their refrigerator to avoid problems with renters.
Eurasian Milfoil has caused significant problems in the Kawarthas & elsewhere.
Each of us can help by spreading the concern. If you observe boaters on the bed consider politely cautioning  them
It’s to the benefit of all cottagers..
