After a one week delay due to necessary dive boat repairs, we are ready for our three full days of diver assisted EWM control activities. Burlap mats and river rock will be in place near the first site to be visited on Tuesday morning. Dominique Binckly has lined up volunteers for fragment patrol, Bob Heyes and Jim Miners will meet the divers at Sandy Cove and the activity begins. With the help of the favourable weather conditions, the three day lineup will look like this:
- Dive day #1 (Tuesday, August 5) We will tackle Site 18 (Pine Tree Point) and Site 1 (Harris Beach) with matting at both sites and some limited hand harvesting at Site 18.
- Tuesday 4:30 pm - second barge loading party at 4:30pm at Heyes' beach.
- Dive day #2 (Wednesday August 6) Finish off any mats at Site 1 then to Bonham's Bay to mat Site 4. If there is time left, we will start hand harvesting at the 5 sites we have identified as the most needy.
- Dive Day #3 (Thursday August 7) Continue hand harvesting activities to completion.
If you are boating during this time please do not approach the dive area - this is important for the safety of all involved in the work. If you are at your property this week, be on the lookout for fragments on your waterfront and remove them for disposal. If you are interested in our daily progress, Jim will provide an update on Facebook each day.
It is important to thank all who have contributed to the EWM Fund, all who volunteer to help, the 9 members of the Working Group and the DSLPOA Executive. Without all of this support, the EWM Identification, Monitoring and Control Program could not continue.
Our region is experiencing below average rainfall, and lake levels are down.

Be attentive to your waterfront infrastructures with below average water levels. Hope for rain.
Join the Mile Swim this Saturday to honour the legacy or challenge yourself to swim a mile. Swimmers as young as 7 and as wise as 75 have participated. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on the swimmers.
The swim was started by Jim Fink (an avid swimmer himself) in the early 80s as a memorial to Ced Hurd, a cottager and avid swimmer who taught many children on the lake to swim and feel safe in the water. The mile distance was chosen with safety and water confidence in mind. The theory being if you were stranded in a boat/water anywhere on the lake and could swim 1 mile comfortably you could make it to back to a shoreline safely.
We continue to hold the swim to honour both Ced Hurd and Jim Fink to encourage swimming skills and water safety.
